Painful heelOne of the most common problems of the foot that we see daily in our office is heel and arch pain. If you have experienced this, you know how debilitating it can be!

So what is going on?  Do I have a heel spur? Bone bruise? Or is my foot broken!?

Plantar Fasciitis is the Most Common Cause of Heel Pain

The most common reason is a condition known as Plantar Fasciitis. This is when the ligament in the bottom of the foot gets stretched and possibly torn and causes pain in the bottom of the heel. This often occurs “out of the blue” and will show up despite doing the same activities you’ve always done. A very common sign is pain that occurs with the first few steps in the morning or after you’ve been sitting for a while and then get up to resume activities. This pain may or may not go away after you’re warmed up but as time goes on it becomes more consistent.

Heel Pain Treatment

There are several ways to treat this problem such as stretching, icing, and wearing higher quality shoes. In our office, we have many options for treating plantar fasciitis. First, we will examine you, take X-rays to check for any problems with the bones and joints, use ultrasound to visualize the ligament and then formulate a treatment plan customized to you. We have had great success with shoe recommendations, medical grade inserts for your shoes, stretching splints, custom foot orthotics, and cortisone shots under ultrasound guidance.
