Regenerative medicine and PRP or Platelet Rich Plasma

Regenerative medicine is a field of medicine that uses your body’s own healing powers.  It’s an exciting, new type of treatment methods that we have for you.

PRP or Platelet Rich Plasma

This therapy helps patients with plantar fasciitis or Achilles’ tendonitis or other types of foot and ankle pain.  What we do is draw blood from the patient and spin the blood into different layers.  Then the platelets are drawn off of that and injected back into the patient’s foot.  The reason we do this is because platelets are the first responders.  When you have an injury, the platelets will come and bring their friends and try to heal that wound.  But what often happens when you have a pain or wound that just doesn’t heal, is that the body forgets about it.  This is a way of reminding your body, “Hey, we have a problem.  Let’s bring all of these healing elements and get this thing going.”  It works differently than cortisone because it uses your own body’s elements and often can mitigate the need for surgery.  We can do this injection, you can go back to work the next day, and 78% of the time, it will take care of the problem.

Next time, we are going to talk about another type of regenerative medicine, called New Shield, which is made up out of human placenta.  You won’t want to miss that one!
